Interview English: how to say what you already know
Most people who freeze in interviews do not lack English. They lack a sentence they can say while their heart is racing. This page is about building that sentence.
What “interview English” actually means
Interview English is the small set of phrases that carry an answer from your head to your mouth. It is not the English of textbooks, emails or college presentations. It is shorter, slower and more repetitive than any of those. A good interview answer sounds almost too simple — because simple is what survives pressure.
The mistake most candidates make is preparing content (what to say) and ignoring delivery (how to say it). You can know the perfect answer and still lose the room if the first five seconds are a wall of “umm, actually, basically”. Interview English is the fix for those five seconds.
Why good English disappears in the room
- Adrenaline narrows attention. Under stress you reach for the first word that comes, not the best one. Short scripts beat long plans.
- You translate instead of speak. Thinking in your first language and converting on the fly costs seconds you do not have.
- You start with filler. “Umm”, “actually”, “I think” become the default opener and eat the confidence out of the answer.
- You have never said the answer out loud. Reading is not speaking. The mouth needs its own practice.
Five rules for interview English
- Open with the answer, not the context. “I built the reports module” beats “So, basically, what happened was…”.
- Use short sentences. One idea per sentence. If a sentence needs a comma and an “and”, split it.
- Speak at 80% of your normal speed. Slowing down feels strange to you and normal to them.
- Pause instead of filling. A two-second silence reads as thoughtfulness, not confusion.
- End on a period. Stop talking when the answer is done. Do not trail off into “so yeah”.
A 15-minute daily practice
Pick one question a day. Say the answer out loud three times: once reading, once from memory, once recorded on your phone. Listen back once. That is the whole loop. Ten days of this changes how you sound more than a month of reading tips.
